As imagens causaram polémica e levaram a Pepsi a emitir um pedido de desculpa a Cristiano Ronaldo e à Seleção Nacional pelas fotografias publicadas na Suécia, em que um boneco vestido com as cores de Portugal e com o número sete (o mesmo do avançado luso) aparece a ser maltratado.
«Vamos passar por cima de Portugal», lê-se na mensagem associada à fotografia em que o mesmo boneco aparece amarrado a uma linha de comboio. Numa outra imagem, o boneco é perfurado por várias agulhas, numa referência à prática de vudu.
«O futebol é conhecido pela paixão que inspira, e a competição está a ficar mais intensa. A equipa sueca infelizmente foi mais longe do que devia. Nunca quisemos dar ao desporto ou ao espírito de competição uma conotação negativa. Pedimos desculpa a todos aqueles que se sentiram ofendidos pelos posts – estes foram imediatamente retirados. Queremos igualmente dirigir as nossas mais sinceras e profundas desculpas ao Cristiano Ronaldo e à Seleção Portuguesa de Futebol», lê-se no comunicado publicado na página oficial do facebook da Pepsi Portugal.
